Primary Math Games Workshop

Timeline:
Half day up to a two-day workshop

Suggested Attendees:
Pre-kindergarten – through Grade 2/3 teachers, teacher assistants, special education, and afterschool program staff, curriculum coordinators, math coaches

Available Format:
This workshop will help your primary students gain confidence and competence with key math concepts in fun and engaging ways! We’ll teach you a variety of math games that incorporate the use of cards, dice, multi-sided dice, number lines, dominoes and other easily found math manipulatives.  Concepts covered include:

• Counting, Comparing Numbers, One-to-One Correspondence, and Subitizing 
• Operations including strategies for developing fact fluency with understanding Number and Operations in Base Ten,
• Understand Place Value Concepts from Make 10, 100’s, 1000’s 
• Representing and Interpreting
• Data with Charts and Graphs
  

Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to play each game, learn how to differentiate the activities, and learn how to develop math journal extensions, maximize math talk, and how to use the game activities for assessment purposes. 

Student samples, game boards, and ideas for whole/small group instruction will be provided. We’ll also incorporate practical ideas for classroom organization and management to ensure effective implementation of games as a teaching strategy. 

Ideas for developing weekly lessons plans and student work samples will also be shared. Schools can pre-purchase kits and resources, and participants will be able to implement what they learn the next day in their classrooms and schools.
